Power Provisioning for Diverse Datacenter Workloads

چکیده
The workloads hosted in a datacenter share more than just servers; they also share electrical circuits. Datacenter managers provision the power capacity of these circuits to hosted workloads, often based on peak power needs. In this work, we studied the typical (mode) and peak power needs of 3 real datacenters, using 1) data from hardware manufacturers and 2) past traces of observed power needs. We found that typical power needs were nonmonotonic relative to peak needs. That is, some applications with low typical power needs had large peak needs—stemming from the diverse power utilization of datacenter workloads. Such diversity caused surprising order inversions where workloads with relatively small peak power had relatively large typical needs. Based on these results, we propose a power provisioning approach that considers powerutilization diversity. Our approach provides 1) predictable monotonic results as power capacity increases and 2) performs better than approaches commonly used

SLA-based virtual machine management for heterogeneous workloads in a cloud datacenter
Efficient provisioning of resources is a challenging problem in cloud computing environments due to its dynamic nature and the need for supporting heterogeneous applications. Even though VM (Virtual Machine) technology allows several workloads to run concurrently and to use a shared infrastructure, still it does not guarantee application performance. Thus, currently cloud datacenter providers e...

Efficient provisioning of resources is a challenging problem in cloud computing environments due to its dynamic nature and the need for supporting heterogeneous applications with different performance requirements. Currently, cloud datacenter providers either do not offer any performance guarantee or prefer static VM allocation over dynamic, which lead to inefficient utilization of resources. E...
متن کاملOn the Energy Proportionality of Scale-Out Workloads
Our increasing reliance on the cloud has led to the emergence of scale-out workloads. These scale-out workloads are latency-sensitive as they are user driven. In order to meet strict latency constraints, they require massive computing infrastructure, which consume significant amount of energy and contribute to operational costs. This cost is further aggravated by the lack of energy proportional...
متن کاملReducing Cluster Energy Consumption through Workload Management
Energy consumption is a major and costly problem in data centers. For many workloads, a large fraction of energy goes to powering idle machines that are not doing any useful work. There are two causes of this inefficiency: low server utilization and a lack of power proportionality. We focus on addressing this problem for two workloads: (1) a traditional, front-end web server workload and (2) an...

The horizon of computer systems is changing. Moore’s law is power constrained, making energy efficiency the primary goal of computer systems. In particular, memory energy has emerged as the key efficiency bottleneck, owing to extensive research in low power CPU architectures. On the other hand, the popularity of modern day internet services has lead to a vast expansion of datacenters, magnifyin...
